New Year and Another New Diet?

As a fitness instructor, I see every December come and go with less and less participants. Last week 2 people held out to join me in a Body Pump class. With only 2 people, it does turn into a sort of informal personal training session but fun and effective none-the-less. We discussed how the new year will issue in a new group of people to the gym for about 2 months taking every class they can in hopes of losing weight gained from the previous year or years. I'm all about a "New" start and Jan. 1 is a good day as any to do that but please start slowly and be smart.

Becoming healthy or losing pounds isn't about a fast race, it's about running a smart race. We overindulge at the holidays because we enjoy family and friends and it's great isn't it? Then we wake on Jan 1st and realize that the holidays are over and we may not feel good about what we see in the mirror and how we feel. The first step is decision. The decision to feel better. The decision to make changes and run a smart race.

I think the first thing to change is diet. Please don't think about all the things you have to eliminate. Instead think about all the new and great tasting foods you will experience. Learn to shop on the outter edges of your market. Most of the aisles inside the store contain processed foods. Get to know the deli, and the fresh fruits and vegetable areas. Again start slowly and eliminate sugars, and processed foods. If you want to further refine your diet, then eliminate dairy and limit red meat and grains. Try to eat at least 9 servings of vegetables and fruit per day and drink 64-128oz of water per day. No need to count calories because you will be eating great food and feeling better.

Cheat: What? Did I just say you should cheat? Yes. Stick to your nutritional diet 6 days and then pick a day each week that you allow yourself to cheat. Maybe it means having a large Tex-Mex meal with a large Margarita. Great. The point is not to deprive yourself every single day. Changing the way you eat and live is not enjoyable or sustainable if you feel deprived every day of your life. Allow yourself some enjoyment especially in the beginning and soon you will find healthy alternatives to fast food, and sitting on the couch.

Concentrate on you diet for a week or two and then think about your workout routine. The common mistake is to do what everyone else is doing. If you are not a morning person, then don't try to get up at 5am and do that Spinning class everyday..because that will last for about a week and within 2 months, you won't be doing anything. Find a time of day that works for you. Determine a schedule that you will stick with and continue for more than a week.

Do a variety of workouts that you enjoy. Anything that keeps your heart rate elevated but not out of breath for 30-60 minutes per day is great. Some people even clean their house at super top speed. If it gets you sweating and using your muscles, then it's a great addition to your workout schedule. Make sure to do a variety of exercises and a variety of workouts. This keeps your muscles engaged in different ways and keeps your attention over long periods of time. Also remember to use different weights and different routines because every 4 weeks or so, your muscle become accustom to the workout. Do a variety of workouts and change up the individual exercises within those workouts.

Cardio vs. Weights?: This is simple. Alternate your cardio and lifting to create a variety. Yes, I like using that descriptive word because we all get into ruts and especially with our workouts. Everyone needs cardio activities and weight lifting exercising. Remember that muscles burn more calories then fat. So the more muscles you have the more calories you'll burn while you're resting. Many women in my classes ask if they will get big bulky muscles if they lift any weights. The answer is NO. Women aren't naturally built to get bulky muscles. Normally women will lose fat and gain beautiful lean muscles from lifting.

This sort of goes back to the variety subject. Besides cardio and weights, please remember to do stretching and yoga (or pilates) as part of your overall workout routine. If you have hours to workout everyday, then you should have no problem in fitting in 5 cardio sessions/3 weight lifting sessions/and as much yoga as possible per week but for some of us trying to fit in an hour 5 or 6 times per week is really pushing it. With family, house, running a company (yes some of us do!)and everything else we need to do, the reality is that we have to schedule in some time for ourselves and it may be only 4-6 hours per week. Remember that whatever you can do everyday to be active and healthy is beneficial.

Try to reach at least 3 cardio sessions per week, 2 weight lifing workouts (at least 24-48 hours in between each) and 1-2 yoga sessions per week. This will give you a great plan. Eat well and drink lots of water and you'll be feeling great in no time. And that race will get easier and easier and before you know it, it'll be Christmas 2009!

Holiday Tip from Healing Lifestyles & Spas

The holiday season often requires lots of family-oriented activities. This year, instead of sitting around a table gorging on food you don't need and rehashing the same old stories you've been telling for decades, break the monotony and try something new! Marsha Hudnall, MS, RD, CD Director at Green Mountain at Fox Run--a healthy living resort in Vermont suggests:

-Pumpkin Bowling -- Grab a few pumpkins (smaller ones may work best), set up gourd 'pins' and have a fun and funny lawn pumpkin bowling game with family and friends.

-Make Your Own Obstacle Course -- Join family and friends for an improvised obstacle course at the park. Walk a park path, stopping at a bench for push-ups, followed by sit-ups on the grass, another short walk to a tree branch to do pull-ups and then lunges back to the path.

-Fun with Fido – Make your daily dog walk a family activity! Get the whole gang together to walk Fido to the park or field and have fun chasing, throwing Frisbee, a ball, whatever entertains you, others and of course Fido.

-Play Date -- Add active times to the usual evening get-togethers with family and friends. Carve an hour out of the evening pre or post dinner to toss a football, play soccer, baseball or basketball, run a turkey trot, fly a kite, walk the beach, hike through peaceful woods.

-Pine Cone Toss -- Make a board with holes to toss cones through, or place Hula hoops on the ground and count how many stay inside the hoop instead of bouncing out.

Whatever you do, be active and have fun creating new memories this year!

Remembrance Day/Veteran's Day

Remembrance Day – also known as Poppy Day, Armistice Day (the event it commemorates) or Veterans Day – is a day to commemorate the sacrifices of members of the armed forces and of civilians in times of war, specifically since the First World War. It is observed on 11 November to recall the end of World War I on that date in 1918. (Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 with the German signing of the Armistice.) The day was specifically dedicated by King George V, on 7 November 1919, to the observance of members of the armed forces who were killed during war; this was possibly done upon the suggestion of Edward George Honey to Wellesley Tudor Pole, who established two ceremonial periods of remembrance based on events in 1917.

Key To Longevity

The New 40, 50, 60...
By: Shari Mycek for Spa Magazine

People come from all over the globe to hear Dr. Andrew Weil, director of integrative health and healing at Miraval resort, speak on longevity. In case you can't make it to his three-day Healthy Aging seminar just yet, we've outlined his five key strategies for living well longer below.

Adjust Your Attitude "Growing old should increase, not decrease, the value of human life," Weil says. "Just as with bourbon, time has the potential to smooth out roughness, add agreeable qualities, and improve character. If we change our attitude about aging, the way we age will change."

Maintain Connections Weil encourages people to stay socially and intellectually connected. "Make a list of people in your life in whose company you feel more alive, happy, and optimistic, and make an effort to spend more time with them," he suggests. Weil explains that any activity that makes you feel more alive, more connected to others and to nature, less isolated, and more comfortable with change is beneficial, helping you enhance your physical and mental health and accept the fact of aging.

Keep Healthy and Active Regularly moving the body with activities that raise the heart rate is central to healthy aging, according to Weil, who personally stays fit by swimming, biking, or walking daily. Of course, he also advocates the obvious: Watch your weight, have annual checkups, and don't smoke.

Honor Your Spirit Weil is big on mindful breathing. "Simply minding the breath is a way of expanding consciousness beyond the ego," he says. Yoga is also on his list. "I couldn't be more pleased to see yoga becoming so mainstream in our part of the world; I think it will increase the numbers of happy and healthy people here," he says. Equally important is reaching out and giving time and energy to help others. "Our spiritual selves resonate with others, and that connection is healing," Weil explains.

Eat Well Last, but certainly not least, for Weil is eating well. In his personal life, he follows a modified Mediterranean anti-inflammatory diet and adds a few of his other favorite longevity-boosting foods and condiments. For example, he regularly consumes turmeric — which is being studied for its possible role in preventing Alzheimer's. "I add a teaspoon to soups, stews, and bean dishes," Weil says. He also indulges in dark chocolate (at least 70 percent cacao) for its antioxidants and polyphenols.

We have discontinued our Creme Brulee Honey Bath, and 4oz Body Lotions. We have many changes/additions to our Body Butters. Later this month we will introduce new butters: Coffee, Avocado, Olive, & Cocoa Butter and will offer one size of the Shea Butter in Unscented only.

Also to our Bath Teas: We have discontinued the Bulk tea in Tins, and are concentrating on our Bagged Teas due to customer responses about handling the loose teas and making sure that tubs stay clean!

Synthetic vs. natural fragrances

The topic of fragrance came up today on Twitter. A Bath/Body company indicated that a customer smelled some of their different "natural" soaps and complained that they smelled "funny".

This is a common topic in today's market. The most natural scents are those of Essential Oils as these are derived from real things found in nature: like flowers, roots, bark and fruit skins. The problem comes in when large "mass" produced products are called "Grapefruit" scented or "Sage/Cedarwood" and they have no essential oils in the product. They use synthetic fragrances and then add a bunch of chemicals to keep those fragrance strong and obnoxious.

One of the best examples is Ginger. Real Ginger Essential Oil has an aquired smell. But if said customer heads to the mall and smells any product at Bath & Body Works or another similar store, they'll find Ginger-titled products that smell almost sweet and nothing like natural ginger.

Then that customer shops at an independent bath/body store and wonders why things may smell "funny" because they aren't strong and sweet like the stores at the mall.

This goes for coloring too. Natural products are naturally scented and use natural ingredients. Ever seen all of the different "colors" of naturally occurring Shea Butter or even Hemp Oil? Their colors can range from deep yellows or greens to lighter yellow. The coloring differences are natural. Not every flower is the same color or every tree the same shape. That is the great thing about natural things. And using natural ingredients is the best thing about natural bath/body products. Color may vary and scent may vary. The goodness is unmatchable.

So please remember when shopping for your natural bath products. Read the ingredients. If the product is Grapefruit Scrub..then does the product use real sugar and grapefruit essential oil? Look for real ingredients, not chemicals. You wouldn't eat chemicals, right? If you put chemicals on your skin, you are absorbing the chemcials into your body. It's the same thing as eating the chemicals. If any chemicals are listed on the label or if the company doesn't list any ingredients, then keep shopping.

Also remember that Fragrance can be fine but it's the chemicals that are added to keep that fragrance strong. Most people that have allergic reactions to products, are usually allergic to the chemicals and not the fragrance or natural ingredients.

Matt is Back!!

Matthew "Matt (Mathias)" Harding is an American video game developer and Internet celebrity known as Dancing Matt for his viral videos that show him dancing in front of landmarks and street scenes in various international locations. Harding has since achieved notoriety through widespread coverage of his travel exploits in major print and broadcast media outlets.

Originally from Westport, Connecticut, where he began his game industry career working for a video game specialty store called Cutting Edge Entertainment, Harding later worked as an editor for GameWeek Magazine in Wilton, Connecticut, and then as a software developer for Activision in Santa Monica, California and then Brisbane, Australia.

Harding claims that a sarcastic joke of his about the popularity of shoot 'em up games led Pandemic Studios to develop the game Destroy All Humans!, on which he received a conceptual credit. Saying he "didn't want to spend two years of my life writing a game about killing everyone", he quit his job and began traveling, leading to the production of his first video.

Harding was known for a particular dance, and while videotaping each other in Vietnam, his traveling companion suggested he add the dance. The videos were uploaded to his website for friends and family to enjoy. Later, Harding edited together 15 dance scenes, all with him center frame, with the background music "Sweet Lullaby (Nature's Dancing 7" Mix)", a 1992 world music song by Deep Forest that uses lyrics from a dying Solomon Islands language.

(The original "Sweet Lullaby" music video, which was nominated by MTV for music video of the year, consists of a little girl riding a tricycle in front of iconic scenes from around the globe. The same clip was used as a station identification for the SBS television network.)

The video was passed around by e-mail and eventually became "viral", with his server getting 20,000 or more hits a day as it was discovered, generally country by country due to language barriers, before the launch of major video upload sites.

Harding created a second version of the video in 2006, with additional dancing scenes from subsequent travels, called "Dancing 2006". At the request of Stride, a gum brand, he accepted sponsorship of this video, since he usually travels on a limited budget.

His videos are viewable on YouTube, Google Video, and his own site www.wherethehellismatt.com. His second video has been watched 9,726,484 times on YouTube as of June 22, 2008 and Harding's YouTube channel is ranked "#30 - Most Viewed (All Time) - Directors" as of March 25, 2007. Harding released his third dancing video on June 20, 2008. The video is the product of 14 months of traveling in 42 countries.

Slimming of Lower Legs

I read this great piece on MSN this morning, and as a certified fitness instructor myself it's one of the most common questions asked. Great info here...especially about intervals. For myself and others that have bad knees, treadmill/elliptical at a constant high rate may not be the answer. I do the "7s". What is that? I walk, say at about 4 mph for 6 minutes and then do a 7 mph rate for 1 full minute. I call it the 7s but it probably should be called the 4-6-n-1? Well the point is...the body does a better job of building the heart and eliminating fat if you do intervals of high intensity rather than a medium rate for a longer period of time. Try it next time you workout. See how much you sweat by doing the "7s" for 30 minutes or any combination of intervals that works for you compared to a standard 30 minute "same rate" routine.

Let me know your comments and thoughts.

Elliptical or Treadmill?
Which cardio machine is the best to slim down heavy thighs?
By Martica Heaner, M.A., M.Ed., for MSN Health & Fitness

Q. I walk on the treadmill every day for three miles at 4 miles per hour. I haven’t noticed any fat loss in my legs yet. Would I get leaner legs by using the elliptical trainer instead?

A. To decrease fat in your legs, you need to aim for body-fat loss all over since you can’t dictate to your body where it sheds fat. Fat loss is about burning more calories than you eat. Both the treadmill and the elliptical are great ways to burn extra calories. But how hard you work on either of them (and how long you stick to it) will affect how many calories you burn. That, in turn, will affect how quickly you see fat loss.

Elliptical trainers have different levels of resistance. To burn the most calories that you can in the time you spend in your workout, try to move quickly through higher levels of resistance. Aim to work out at the highest levels of intensity that you feel comfortable with.
When it comes to burning calories on a treadmill, there is a big difference between walking, jogging and running. Generally, walking burns fewer calories since you are working at a lower intensity—unless you add hills to your walk, speed up your walk, and even try to insert some jogging intervals into your walk.

You don’t mention how long you’ve been at your current routine. But keep in mind that lower body fat is resilient. It’s a healthy kind of fat, unlike ab fat, which is associated with increased health risks. Not only that, there is a decreased circulation of fat-burning enzymes in the lower body area, which also explains why it’s harder to budge.

Some research suggests that, for women especially, more high-intensity exercise is needed to help budge stubborn fat. So, is your walk too easy? Walking at 4 miles per hour may be a moderate pace if you are fit or over 5-foot-7-inches, but it might be a vigorous pace if you are new to exercise or 5-foot-4-inches and under. If you’re not pushing yourself, speed up to burn more calories.

And watch out for off-duty eating. Often, women who begin an exercise program in the hopes of losing weight, compensate for the calories they burned in their workout by eating more. You may only be burning about 300 calories on your three-mile walk. All you’d need to do to negate that burn is to sneak in an extra candy bar, or a couple of beers. Sometimes, people feel like they deserve to splurge as a reward for their workout. But if you do, you’re unlikely to see the fat loss you desire (although you’d still be getting all the health benefits of the walk).

To ensure that you’re not eating as much as you exercise off, keep a food and fitness log for a week to keep track of your energy input and output. Also, try bumping up your calorie burn by either walking faster, longer, or at a higher intensity (add inclines), or by inserting some jogging sprints.

Pucker Up!

During the dry summer heat or the cold winter months, the thin skin on your lips is always exposed making them prone to dehydration. Since heading for the comfortable weather of the tropics is not an option for most of us, drinking plenty of high-quality H20 will hydrate you from the inside out, hopefully preventing the chapped problem in the first place. But when more assistance to the lips is needed, you can stop the dryness by coating the delicate skin with lip balm.

Dr. Erin Welch, an assistant professor of dermatology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, says a protective layer of lip balm or ointment can hydrate the lips and seal in moisture as long as you reapply the product. When you eat or drink, wipe your lips, or talk a lot, the balm comes off your lips, so make a habit of keeping the lip-saving tube handy by putting one in a work drawer, in your car, and in your purse. Being able to easily grab lip balm will prevent you from licking your lips when they start to dry out. Skip the licking and go straight for the moisture-packed goods for instant (and long-lasting) lip satisfaction.

Locks Of Love!

HAIR TODAY, GONE TOMORROW.

It's been a stressful and eventful day! I finally grew my hair long enough to contribute to the Locks for Love organization. I have long wanted to do this but just couldn't wait long enough between hair cuts. So here is the proof and the results. What a great feeling to contribute finally!!
A special thank you to Geana at Mystique Edge for doing such a great job.

Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. We meet a unique need for children by using donated hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics. Most of the children helped by Locks of Love have lost their hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure. The prostheses we provide help to restore their self-esteem and their confidence, enabling them to face the world and their peers.

There is a reason that men complain about how long their girlfriend/wife takes in the bathroom--because slathering on all of those potions, lotions, foundations, loose powders, highlighters, self-tanners, and shimmers take forever to apply!

Diane Ranger, founder of Colorescience mineral makeup reminds us: "It is said that 80 percent of aging is due to sun exposure, and if I can only have one product that I can't live without, let it be a product that is multi-purpose!"

Simplify your beauty routine by swapping out your stash of skincare for an all-in-one foundation, powder, highlighter, tanner, and sunscreen with mineral makeup. There is a reason that practically all of Hollywood swears by the pigmented, brush-on full-face coverage; it leaves skin looking flawless without the time-consuming fuss.

Mineral makeup is made from natural pigments and made without oils, talc, dyes, perfumes, preservatives or alcohols. It is actually considered "good for you makeup" because it doesn't clog pores and provides a natural SPF! Try Colorescience's Suncanny Foundation Brush -SPF 20 for instantly gorgeous skin.

Time Saving Exercise & Diet Techniques

You don't have to make a whole production out of fitting fitness into your day. Cindy Whitmarsh, fitness expert from ExerciseTV has some time saving exercises that can easily be squeezed into your everyday activities, while still remaining effective! How?

1. Fit fitness into your day. Try standing on one leg anytime you are waiting in line for something! This will help your balance and core stability.

2. Travel with a cooler. Always have a cooler in your car packed with healthy snacks. This not only saves time; it helps avoid the fast food temptations!

3. Take 10! Try to fit in 10 minutes a day to focus on fitness. ExerciseTV has many 10-minute workouts you can do in the privacy of your own home that require no equipment at all! Everyone has ten minutes and at the end of the week you will feel the difference in not only your body but also your mood and mind!

4. Workout smarter! When working out try to pick multifunctional moves. For example, move from a squat into biceps curls followed by an overhead shoulder press and repeat. This will save time but also increase your caloric burn!

5. Incorporate core training into all moves. Try doing an entire workout sitting or laying on an exercise ball. Incorporating the ball forces your body to recruit its core muscles while performing any exercise. You will be working your abs and not even know it!

Mountain Lions? Oh, My!!

As temps reached 70degrees on Saturday, some members of Body Systems went for a group hike/geocaching search in the Black Hills to later find out that a mountain lion attack had occurred at the same location. After the initial shock, the group have decided to add some very essential supplies including mace and walking sticks to their backpacks. So just remember during your next outdoor activity, to be aware and prepared and stay safe.
