Pucker Up!

During the dry summer heat or the cold winter months, the thin skin on your lips is always exposed making them prone to dehydration. Since heading for the comfortable weather of the tropics is not an option for most of us, drinking plenty of high-quality H20 will hydrate you from the inside out, hopefully preventing the chapped problem in the first place. But when more assistance to the lips is needed, you can stop the dryness by coating the delicate skin with lip balm.

Dr. Erin Welch, an assistant professor of dermatology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, says a protective layer of lip balm or ointment can hydrate the lips and seal in moisture as long as you reapply the product. When you eat or drink, wipe your lips, or talk a lot, the balm comes off your lips, so make a habit of keeping the lip-saving tube handy by putting one in a work drawer, in your car, and in your purse. Being able to easily grab lip balm will prevent you from licking your lips when they start to dry out. Skip the licking and go straight for the moisture-packed goods for instant (and long-lasting) lip satisfaction.
